Last week I offered that instead of all the rigmarole about WHAT the goal is and HOW to set it, we focus more on WHY. In this season of my life, I’ve gotten incredibly clear at the macro and at the daily level on WHY.
When thinking about my goals, I parse my life (to the extent that’s even possible) into me, relationships, and work/volunteer/passion projects. I spent quite a lot of timing thinking and refining the WHY. My study of high performers and the practice of coaching high performers has made defining WHY simpler. There are several coaching modules that lead towards WHY: Clarity, Purpose, Necessity/Excellence, and Courage. From the work on those topics, I wrestled with my WHYs for me, relationships, and work+. Why was growing in each of these areas important? What did I want more or less of in these areas? Why would improving change things for the better for me or those around me.
Here’s where I landed. My purpose is to Live, Love and Lead. And I set goals around each of these areas. Why? So I can be ACTIVE, HAPPY and CONGRUENT. Those WHYs mean something to me and the goals I set for them feel like I’m pushing myself and are also realistic enough to feel achievable.
Have you set your goals for this year? AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT. Now’s the time to DECIDE and WRITE IT DOWN.
KNOW YOUR WHY.
